The town was originally called “Scrub Oak”
As you can see in the map above, the town of San Leanna was first known as “Scrub Oak.” It was named that because the area was covered in scrub oak and cedar trees. And scrub oak is where the town gets its first mention in a historical document. It was in a letter dated April 25, 1885 that a Mr. S. M. Gage, of the General Land Office, mentioned that he had assigned the town of Scrub Oak to an individual named Andrew C. Coleman.

During the early days of San Leanna, one of the main attractions for travelers was the Scrub Oak Station. There, they would stay in the Scrub Oak Hotel. But that all changed in the 1920s, when railroads began running diesel-powered locomotives. The old steam-powered trains weren’t able to run on the new tracks, and that spelled trouble for Scrub Oak Station.
