Also known as Essex crystal jewelry, these pieces feature hand-painted images, often of cherished animals, such as pet dogs and horses. Wealthy Victorian patrons often commissioned these personal pieces, with the chosen subject being etched into the flat part of the rock crystal cabochon and then carefully painted and then sealed which materials such as mother of pearl. This pair of earrings, converted from antique cufflinks, show a pair of spaniels, one of which stands at attention on yellowed ground with the other on grassier green terrain.
