The city of Austin is located in Central Texas. It is approximately 150 miles northwest of Houston, 160 miles south of Dallas, and 75 miles north of San Antonio. The city is nestled in the foothills of the Texas hill country. The elevation of Austin varies from four hundred and twenty-five feet to more than a thousand feet above sea level. This makes Austin more hilly than most Texas cities.
In recent years, Austin has developed a strong technology industry. Many companies, including IBM, HP, and Dell, have set up shop in the city. The city is also home to Nvidia, Applied Materials, and General Motors. There are also many nontech companies in the area. Kendra Scott Design, for example, employs over 100 people and has opened multiple retail stores in the city.
The population of Austin is a diverse one. The city is made up of a mix of whites, African-Americans, Hispanics, and Asians. However, the percentage of non-Hispanic whites in the city is decreasing due to the rapid growth of Hispanics in recent years. As of 2010, the Austin population was estimated at 790,390 people. Of those, Non-Hispanic whites comprised 48.7% of the city’s population. Hispanics and African-Americans each made up around eight percent of the population. Additionally, 5.3% of the city’s residents identified as LGBT.
The people’s Republic of Austin is an interesting blend of suburban conservatism and downtown liberality. Although Austin is generally conservative, it leans liberally on most political issues and votes Democrat. In fact, the last Republican to win the city’s election in Austin was Texas Governor George W. Bush, and in 2003, Austin passed a resolution opposing the USA Patriot Act.
Austin also has a lively music scene. The city hosts several major music festivals, including South By Southwest and Austin City Limits. For those who prefer not to drive, the city offers a number of convenient public transportation options. Interstate 35 and Mopac Expressway provide easy access to major areas. State Highway 45, a tolled extension of Loop 1, runs east-west from Cedar Park to Pflugerville. The city’s bus system serves most neighborhoods, as well as outlying suburbs. In addition, the city has a metrorail system that connects downtown and north central Austin to Leander. Most museums are also accessible via the bus system.
If you’re a fan of craft beer, Austin has a thriving craft beer scene, with over 50 microbreweries in the metro area.
